The story is about a beautiful, simple village woman named Vidya (Divyanka Tripathi) from Benaras. She is a Cinderella-type who does all the work in her household and her uncle, aunt and cousin torture her. They don't allow Vidya to get an education, leaving her illiterate. Soon, Rajendra Pratap Singh (the local Thakur) comes to Benaras to find a wife for his son Sagar. Vidya and Sagar meet for the first time while Sagar is swimming in the Ganges river and Vidya is washing clothes. Sagar's father sees Vidya and decides that she will be his daughter-in-law, not caring that she is uneducated.
On her wedding day, Vidya finds out that Sagar is mentally unstable, having the mindset of an eight-year-old due to an accident that almost claimed his life. Sagar does not realize he is married; he and Vidya get off to a rocky start. Sindoora, Sagar's evil stepsister, arrives and confronts Rajendra about the marriage, leading to his heart attack and death. Sagar becomes the sole heir to the Pratap Singh fortune. However, Sindoora wants the Thakur property to herself and will go to any height to gain it.
Sindoora's other two sisters are Mahua (Himansshi Chaudhary) and Chandra (Addite Shirwaikar), who do whatever Sindoora tells them to do and continually harass Vidya. Vidya is not alone: Sindoora's husband Aniket is on her side. Sindoora's son Bharat is closer to Sagar than to his own mother. Aniket knows Sindoora is evil and tries to bring Vidya and Sagar closer together. This proves to be a difficult task as Sindoora is continually plotting against Vidya, even trying to prove that Vidya attempted to poison Sagar. Slowly however, Sagar accepts Vidya and calls her his best friend. Their relationship blooms and he falls in love to the point where he can't live without her.
Sagar and Vidya's love is blissful and beautiful, however, Sagar is still in the mindset of a child. Vidya learns of a hospital that can cure Sagar. She gets Sagar to the hospital. He has an operation and becomes normal again — with a horrible catch: He only remembers his life before the accident, not after it. This means he doesn't know that he is married and refuses to acknowledge Vidya as his wife.
He returns home, where the Thakur family are delighted to see him back to normal. Vidya arrives as well, refusing to accept defeat. Sagar reluctantly lets her stay and finally remembers that Vidya is his wife and that they had fallen in love. He also remembers that his accident was not an accident at all — it was planned by Sindoora, who had been trying to murder him to take his property and fortune.
Sagar and Vidya try to escape Sindoora's wrath but, soon enough, she corners them on the edge of a cliff and points a gun. Vidya is shot first; Sagar second. With his last breaths, Sagar tells Sindoora that the story is not over and he and Vidya will return. Vidya and Sagar drag themselves across the ground to each other but, before their hands can meet, Sindoora shoots them again, finally killing them.
Sagar and Vidya are reborn the very night of their deaths as Amar and Divya. 21 years later, they are now the complete opposites of what they were in their previous lives: Amar is a spontaneous tour guide in Beneras and Divya is a modern woman from the city.
Sindoora is introduced to Divya after she makes a dramatic entrance. The family is shocked at Divya's resemblance to Vidya. Divya and Amar meet in Banares in a similar way they met in their previous births. Though they get off to a rocky start, they soon become friends and, as fate would have it, fall in love. Eventually, they get married and destiny brings them back to the Thakur household. Divya and Amar get frequent flashbacks of their previous lives but neither actually remembers until Sindoora shoots Divya. Divya survives and remembers everything from her previous birth, also remembering that Sindoora is their murderer.
Divya tries to prove to Amar that Sindoora is their enemy and the cause of their previous death but Amar refuses to believe her. Eventually, Amar also remembers his previous life and who Sindoora really is after she attempts to murder him, too. Bharat, Sindoora's son, who had ran away 21 years ago at the time of Sagar and Vidya's death as he had realized his mother is evil, returns to help Amar and Divya get their revenge. With Bharat's help, Amar and Divya are able to overthrow Sindoora. During their battle, Sindoora falls into a lake and, though her body is never found, she is presumed to be eaten by crocodiles.
Amar and Divya embrace their new and happy life, and Divya becomes pregnant. Sindoora re-enters their lives as it turns out she was never dead. Sindoora harms Divya while she is pregnant, causing Divya to go into a coma after giving birth to a girl, Dia.
Divya recovers from her coma, but Sindoora works her many traps on them, making their lives like hell. Her evil workings cause Amar to be sent to jail and sentenced to death. Sindoora kidnaps their baby daughter and hangs her from the branch of a tall tree, threatening to drop her from that height and kill her. Divya has no idea what to do: On one hand, her husband Amar is seconds away from being hanged and on the other hand, her daughter Dia is at risk of being killed by Sindoora.
Bharat calls the police at the last minute and they arrive to see Sindoora keeping the baby dangling from the tree. They realize Amar is innocent; as he is 30 seconds away from being hanged, they call the executioner and stop everything. Amar is saved and Sindoora is finally sent to jail.
Sindoora goes mentally crazy in prison, just as she had rendered Sagar so many years ago. Divya and Amar have their wedding again with the entire family present. Sindoora's evil reign has finally come to an end after more than 25 years and Sagar and Vidya (as Amar and Divya) are at peace. The series ends on a beautiful note as Amar and Divya finally get their fairytale happy ending.
